USPS Postal Service Regulations

For over two decades, we have built our reputation on providing clients with competitive prices for residential and commercial apartments. Our sales experts are extremely knowledgeable and can also help you with United States Postal Service (USPS) regulations that have changed a number of times over the years. We want to ensure that you select the right product for your building or project.

Which Option Do You Need?

The US Postal Service sets guidelines and provides USPS certification for commercial mailbox design, including any apartment mailboxes with centralized mail delivery that the USPS will be servicing. These regulations are strictly enforced for mail delivery to apartment buildings and any multi-tenant complex, whether for use as residential or commercial.

Vertical

Tall and thin, vertical mailboxes are less common today, but remain approved by USPS for replacement purposes only. USPS requires that only 4C horizontal units be installed in all new apartment buildings and any apartment receiving major renovations.

4C Horizontal

This front loading apartment mailbox design is approved by USPS for new apartment construction and for any apartments undergoing major renovations. These commercial apartment mailbox units can be recessed or surface mounted for added flexibility during mailbox installation.

CBU

Designed for indoor and outdoor use, these “cluster box units” are manufactured by Florence Mailboxes Manufacturing and sit on a pedestal. The pedestal CBU mailbox design is now USPS’s preferred outdoor centralized mail delivery system for apartment buildings and approved for use in all old, renovated, and new apartment buildings.

Multi-Family

The ideal solution for apartments, duplexes, or office complexes requiring an elegant centralized mail solution. These Multi-Family Mailboxes and Post Combos are available in a variety of designs and finishes. A selection of matching mailbox posts is also available.

Parcel Locker

Worried that parcel and package deliveries won’t fit in your mailbox? This is where Parcel Lockers collection comes in. Available in 2 and 4 Door variants, these all aluminum mail lockers are USPS approved. Order these heavy duty, secure CBUs from our product experts.

4C Pedestal Mailbox

If being purchased for U.S. mail delivery, 4C Pedestal Streetside Mailboxes require USPS approval prior to installation. Contact your local postmaster for approval prior to purchasing and installing. If you intend to use the 4C Pedestal Mailbox for private (in-house) mail delivery, then there is no need to contact your local postmaster for approval. These multi door mailboxes have stainless steel cam locks to keep letters and parcels secure from mail theft attempts. To learn more about these heavy duty mailboxes, chat with a live assistant.

FAQ

How do apartment mailboxes work?

Apartment mailboxes, or cluster box units (CBUs), are centralized mail delivery systems designed for multi-unit residences. They provide secure, individual mail compartments for each tenant and parcel lockers for package deliveries. Mail carriers use a master key to access the entire mailbox unit for easy mail distribution. Residents can retrieve mail by using their designated mailbox key. Apartment mailboxes must comply with USPS regulations to ensure security and accessibility.

How do Mail Carriers open apartment mailboxes?

Mail carriers use a special master key, called an "arrow key," to open apartment mailboxes. The arrow key grants access to the entire mailbox unit, allowing the mail carrier to deliver mail to each compartment easily. This system ensures secure and efficient mail delivery for apartment residents. You can find more information about USPS key management here.

How big are apartment mailboxes?

Apartment mailboxes come in various sizes to accommodate different needs. However, the USPS has established minimum size requirements for mail compartments: at least 12 inches wide, 3 inches high, and 15 inches deep. Parcel lockers within the mailbox units also have specific size requirements. You can find more details on mailbox dimensions in the USPS Standard 4C.

Who owns mailboxes in apartment buildings?

The property owner or the property management company typically owns the mailboxes in apartment buildings. They are responsible for installing and maintaining USPS-approved apartment mailboxes to ensure secure and efficient mail delivery for all residents.

Who is responsible for apartment mailboxes?

Property owners or property management companies are generally responsible for apartment mailboxes. They must ensure that the mailboxes are USPS-approved, properly installed, and well-maintained. Additionally, they must handle any repairs or replacements if necessary.

What are apartment mailboxes called?

Apartment mailboxes are commonly referred to as cluster box units (CBUs) or centralized mail delivery systems. These terms describe the centralized, multi-unit mailbox systems designed for apartment complexes and other residential communities.

Can I leave a letter in my apartment mailbox for pickup?

Yes, you can leave a letter in your apartment mailbox for pickup, provided there is an outgoing mail slot or compartment in the mailbox unit. Simply place your stamped and addressed letter in the designated outgoing mail area, and your mail carrier will collect it during their regular delivery route.

Can I leave outgoing mail in my apartment mailbox?

If your apartment mailbox unit has a designated outgoing mail slot or compartment, you can leave your outgoing mail there for pickup. Ensure you properly address your mail with the correct postage before placing it in the outgoing mail area. If your mailbox unit doesn't have an outgoing mail slot, you'll need to drop off your mail at a USPS collection box or post office.
