Cluster Box Units are simple to maintain and clean. Due to the durable nature of aerospace-grade aluminum and the weather-proof powder-coating, these units will resist erosion, scratching and peeling year after year. However, proper care and cleaning will keep your unit looking pristine and prevent environmental buildup.
Basic Mailbox Cleaning
- Use a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent or a properly diluted, biodegradable, water-based cleanser such as Simple Green™.
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners such as Comet™ or Brillo Pads™, as they may scratch the surface of your CBU.
- Simply wipe off the surface from top to bottom to avoid run-down.
- Rinse with plain water and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
- Avoid cleaning during extreme temperature conditions.
Basic Hardware Cleaning
If a mailbox lock or door mechanism becomes clogged with ice due to extreme winter conditions, the lock manufacturer suggests using Tri-Flow Superior Lubricant Aerosol™.
- Spray this lubricant directly into the keyhole and onto the key.
- Slide the key in and out of the lock several times to spread the lubricant.
- Do not apply too much product, as a small amount is sufficient.
- Wipe off any excess lubricant from the lock and key.
CBU Cleaning in Coastal Regions
In foggy coastal regions, frequent cycles of condensation and drying can create a buildup of atmospheric salts and dirt. This requires that cleaning be done more frequently than in non-coastal regions or where rainfall is more frequent.
Removing CBU Mailbox Graffiti
Depending upon the color of your CBU, it may be possible to remove spray painted or marker-applied graffiti from powder-coated surfaces using a mild, petroleum-based solvent, such as mineral spirits, or a stronger cleaner such as Krud Kutter™.
- Test-clean a small area first for a few seconds at a time. Do not allow the chemical cleaner to remain on surface for an indefinite period, as this may damage the CBU's exterior coating.
- Remove any cleanser residue with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser, followed by a plain water rinse as noted above. Dry with a clean, soft cloth.
